Historical Background
George F. Whitworth (March 15, 1816 – October 6, 1907) was a Presbyterian missionary and early pioneer of the Puget Sound area. Whitworth established many churches and is considered the father of Presbyterianism in Washington. He was the president of the University of Washington (then the Territorial University) from 1865-1866 and 1874-1876, and was the founder of Whitworth College (now Whitworth University) in 1890. He is buried at Lake View Cemetery, Seattle, Washington.
George Whitworth was married to Mary Elizabeth Thomson Whitworth and had at least 6 children: James Edwin, Frederick Harrison, John Matthew, Clara, George Jr. and Etta.
