Historical Note
Ohio Oil Company was formed in 1887 and became part of Standard Oil in 1889. After Standard Oil was broken up in 1911, Ohio Oil expanded into the American West, establishing both drilling and refining operations in the Rocky Mountains. In 1962 the Ohio Oil Company changed its name to Marathon Oil.

The Ohio Oil Company materials comprise photographs of oil field operations primarily in the western United States, especially in Wyoming and Utah. Also included are issues of the Ohio Oil Company employee magazine “The Beacon” and other printed material about the company.
