Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Einar Nielsen Fieldhouse was designed by the Ashton and Evans architecture firm and built on the University of Utah campus in 1939 to serve as a multi-purpose arena. It was named in honor of Einar Nielsen, who worked as a men's athletic trainer at the University of Utah. It was designed to hold 4,000 people and was the largest building on campus at the time it was opened. In 1943, the Fieldhouse was repurposed to serve as a dormatory for soldiers who were being trained in medicine at the University (Quist, 2021). After World War II, the Fieldhouse was reconverted into an arena and was the home venue of the University of Utah basketball team until the 1969 opening of the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The building served as a Recreation Center and later as a studio for Mutlidsciplinary Design and Architecture. After the completion of a seismic renovation, in 2021 the University announced that the interior of the building would be repurposed to a new theatre venue for the University of Utah Department of Theatre and the Pioneer Theatre Company (Fetzer, 2021).

The Fred Levine photograph collection consists of 1 black-and-white photograph print. The print was donated with an attached leader reading: "I was with the first group of 1100 soldiers sent to be students under the A. S. T. P. (Army Specialized Training Program). We lived in the Field House and called it 'The Big Bedroom'. It was 1943 and a memorable period in my life. I am pleased to send this photo as a record of our times." Signed, Fred J. [or G.] Levine
