Historical Note
Floyd J. McKay had an active career in the Pacific Northwest as a journalist, author and film documentary maker, as well as teaching journalism (and serving as Department chair) at Western Washington University (WWU) in Bellingham, Washington. Following retirement from WWU, McKay remained active as a reporter and journalist, including work for Crosscut news.
Content Description
Research materials (clippings, correspondence, notes) and copies of articles about the proposed Gateway Pacific Terminal - a controversial attempt to establish an export terminal for coal at Cherry Point in Whatcom County, Washington. Floyd J. McKay collected and generated this collection in the course of his research and writing about the Cherry Point case for Crosscut.com.
Led by Seattle-based developer, SAA Marine, the proposed Gateway Pacific Terminal project was met with widespread opposition from Northwest tribal communities and environmental activists. The project was brought to a halt in 2016, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers refused permits on the basis of the tribal treaty rights of the Lummi Nation.
