Biographical Note
William R. Cowan was born about 1883 in Wisconsin. He was a photographer who worked with his wife Lucretia E. Cowan. They had a studio in Seattle's University District, located at 4730 University Way.
Historical Background
Campus Day was instituted by Edmond Meany in April 1904 and continued until 1934. Campus Day was started as a way to bring the University community of students, faculty, and staff together to perform physical labor on the wooded campus. As years went by the importance of the physical labor faded, but it remained campus tradition. On April 24, 1934, the faculty unanimously passed a motion by Edmond Meany to abandon Campus Day, in favor of employing the University gardeners and Civil Works Administration crews.
Content Description
