Historical Note

High Country News was a non-profit regional news organization focusing on the issues of the American West. Wyoming rancher and wildlife biologist, Tom Bell started the publication in 1969 by purchasing “Camping News Weekly” out of Lander, Wyoming. In 1970, he rebranded it to “High Country News” focusing on the environmental issues of the Western United States. In 1974, Bruce and Joan Hamilton took over publication and in 1983 the HCN board of directors hired Ed and Betsy Marston to run the publication. It also moved from Lander, Wyoming to Paonia, Colorado.

High Country News grew into a regional journalism endeavor that focused on all aspects of environment, people, communities, and politics of the Western region of the United States. From Alaska and the Northern Rockies to the desert Southwest, the Great Plains to the West Coast, HCN covered 12 Western states and hundreds of Indigenous communities, representing a news source for people who cared about the West.
