Historical Note

Stephen H. Rolle was an aeronautical engineer with a career spanning from 1929 to 1971. Born in the early 20th century, Rolle graduated from both the University of Arizona and the University of Pennsylvania. His career began at the Aeronautical Engine Laboratory at the Naval Aircraft Factory, where he worked as a project engineer from 1929 to 1936. He then joined Kinner Airplane & Motor Corp. as chief test engineer and later acting chief engineer. In 1938, Rolle became chief project engineer (powerplants) at the West Coast Aircraft Engineering Branch office of the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA). By 1942, he had risen to chief of the powerplant section within the Aircraft Engineering Division of the CAA. He retired in 1971 as chief of the Propulsion Branch of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Washington, D.C.

Content Description

This collection contains articles and reports written by Stephen H. Rolle over the course of his aeronautical engineering career and photographs he collected of planes and the space shuttle orbiter 101 “Enterprise”. It also contains reports from his time working for the Navy Department, Bureau of Aeronautics that range from 1930 to 1936.
