Historical Note
James Finucane served as executive secretary of the Committee for the Return of Confiscated German and Japanese Property in the middle of the twentieth-century, and he worked with the Confiscated Property Information Services in Washington D. C. which closed its doors in December 1962. Finucane dealt with issues related to post-war reparations, displaced persons, conscription and disarmament, U.S. war crimes trials, and confiscation of German and Japanese assets in the United States. During and after World War II, the U.S. government endeavored to confiscate 500 million dollars’ worth of German and Japanese private property owned in the states—most of which was German. The property included anything from homes and businesses to artwork, jewelry, stocks and bonds, and bank accounts.

Collection contains material for The Committee for the Return of Confiscated German and Japanese Property including a fact sheet for the organization, 14 miscellaneous letters, reports, documents, and speeches on confiscated property, 21 similar items on the Trading with the Enemy Act, and publications of the Confiscated Property Information Services between 1955 and 1962.
