- The Mark L. Lovell Manuscript is an undated microfilmed hand-written document that is primarily a fictional account of life along the Montana-North Dakota border country around 1909. Beach is the setting for some of the narrative, along with the Badlands. Some of the story concerns a tractor salesman from an eastern school who comes to the area for business. Buffalo hunting and farming are other topics covered.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Mark Lloyd Lovell was born on May 4, 1883 in North Dakota. He attended the University of North Dakota as a young man and received a degree in engineering. Lovell went to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York where he served briefly as an instructor in the university’s Sibley College. He returned to North Dakota and took up residence in Beach where he worked as a municipal engineer. He married Lida Isabel Rutherford on June 25, 1907 and the couple had seven children. Lovell died in Beach on September 4, 1962.

Acquisition Information
An original handwritten manuscript by Mark Lloyd Lovell was loaned to the Montana State University Library for microfilming by Alan Bruce Lovell, the author’s grandson, in 1968. The material was returned to the donor in 1969.
