Historical NoteReturn to Top
Ellsworth Leonardson Kolb (1876-1960) and Emery Clifford Kolb (1881-1976) were photographers who operated the longest running photograph studio at the Grand Canyon. They were born in Pennsylvania. In 1901, Ellsworth Kolb moved west, finding work at the Grand Canyon Hotel; Emery Kolb soon joined him. The Kolb brothers purchased a photographic studio in Williams, Arizona and began photographing tourists. In 1904, they built a two-story wooden studio on the rim of the Grand Canyon, at the top of Bright Angel Trail. In 1906, they produced a series of stereographs of various popular views of the canyon. In 1911, they were featured in a film of a canyon boat tour. In 1924, the brothers split their partnership, with Ellsworth Kolb leaving hte canyon. Ellsworth Leonardson Kolb died in Los Angeles on January 9, 1960. Emery Clifford Kolb continued to operate the photograph studio until his death on December 11, 1976. Source: Rowe, J. (2017).
