Biographical Note

Professor Larry Meinert attended Carleton College and subsequently earned his Doctor of Philosophy at Stanford University in 1980. In 1981, he joined the Geology faculty at Washington State University. Prof. Lawrence Meinert specializes in the exploration for ore deposits by applying geological and geochemical methodology to find undiscovered deposits. Prof. Meinert has made numerous trips to Russia and the former Soviet Union primarily to share his knowledge and research on locating mineral resources, such as gold.

Meinert's interest in photography led him to document these visits. According to his exhibition notes Meinert writes: "On all my trips, I was looking at rocks in out of the way places that most people wouldn't (today) or couldn't go. But being a perpetually interested person, I also made a point to see many of the "official sites". Thus the pictures à are a mix of known places and strange places. When I take photographs, I am usually trying to tell a story with color and light. Thus, the photographs record what I was seeing and to some extent, why I was seeing it that way."
