Historical Note

Dave G. Houser grew up in Cody, Wyoming, and worked as an engineering writer on missile bases in southern Wyoming before earning a B.S. degree (cum laude) in journalism from the University of Florida in 1968. He attended graduate studies in mass communications on a teaching grant at Oklahoma State University in 1969. Following a two-year stint as assistant press director at Daytona International Speedway, Houser spent five years as a corporate editor at Coca-Cola in Atlanta, then another five years at PepsiCo, where he served as Director of Corporate Communications. In 1980 he launched what would become a lifetime career as a freelance travel writer and photographer. He visited nearly 160 countries and all 50 states, and as a specialist in offbeat/adventure travel and cruising, he produced articles from some of the world's most remote destinations, amassing more than 1,300 magazine and newspaper credits. He also co-authored three travel guide books and logged more than 20,000 photo credits, many of them through his work illustrating airline, tour and cruise company brochures and advertisements.

He operated a stock photography agency dedicated to travel images (Houserstock) from 1990-2005 and was a contract photographer for the photo agency Corbis for most of his career. He won nearly 40 awards for his writing and photography. The most notable of them include: Society of American Travel Writers Photographer of the Year (1984); Explore Canada Award for travel photography (1984); runner-up for the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalist of the Year (1985); Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Grand Award/Travel Article (1992); Lowell Thomas Award for Best Self-Illustrated Article (1992); runner-up for SATW Photographer of the Year (1993); Bronze Award (2nd runner-up) for Lowell Thomas Travel Journalist of the Year (2009), and seven first-place (Gold Awards) in the North American Travel Journalist Association (NATJA) annual travel journalism competition (2005-2010).
