Biographical Note
Charlotte Hamblen came west from Minnesota with her husband and family in 1887. They settled in Spokane Falls, where her husband, Charles, engaged in the real estate business. Charlotte Hamblen was active in the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, her church, and various lady’s societies.
Content Description
The collection consists of two large diaries, 1881-1897. Mrs. Hamblin was a diligent diarist, making entries nearly every day. The entries are often detailed listing those who came to visit and to those whom she paid visits, the activities of her children and family, and the details of her daily life and work. Enroute to Spokane Falls, their Northern Pacific train derailed near Mandan, Dakota. Her father received a serious cut on his nose, but no one else was injured. All of this is recorded in some detail. The daily entries stop in 1889 and there are but single entries for 1894 and 1897.
