Historical Note

A.B. (Alfred Bertram) Guthrie, Jr. was an American writer and historian known for writing western stories. He is best known for his Pulitzer Prize novel The Way West (1950) and his Academy Award nominated screenplay, Shane.

Shane was a 1953 American Western film from Paramount Pictures that followed a skilled gunfighter with a mysterious past who settled in Wyoming sometime after the Civil War, ultimately helping the local people to fight against a ruthless cattle baron. The film is noted for its landscape cinematography, editing, performances, and contributions to the genre. The picture was produced and directed by George Stevens from a screenplay by A. B. Guthrie Jr., based on the 1949 novel of the same name by Jack Schaefer. Shane stars Alan Ladd and Jean Arthur.
