Historical Note

First Presbyterian Church of Clarkston, Washington was organized as the Vineland Presbyterian Church on June 7, 1897 with ten charter members. The first building, erected at the southwest corner of 13th and Elm Streets, seated only 50 members. The first Sunday school was held in rooms above the Raaberg store on Upper Asotin Road.

About 1900 the church was moved to its present site, where it was enlarged through the years. The eight-room manse was built at a cost of $1,400 in 1902.

From a membership of 37 in 1904, the church, legally renamed The First Presbyterian Church in 1930, grew to 200 members in 1949, when ground was broken for a $35,000 brick educational unit. This was dedicated in 1950. A brick manse was completed in 1951.

The old church was removed and the present $60,000 sanctuary was built and dedicated on March 22, 1953, with a church enrollment of 352. Within a year membership grew to 458. In January of 1955 some of the classrooms were enlarged. By 1962 membership stood at 608. (NOTE: From 100th Anniversary Bulletin.)
