Summary
The concept of a hospital auxiliary organization has a long history in America. In 1752 the first such was created to help Benjamin Franklin's Pennsylvania Hospital. Since then they have grown, centered on the twin pillars of charitable fundraising and volunteer service. The Woodland Park Hospital Auxiliary photograph collection provides an intimate glimpse into the people and actions of one such organization in a local Portland Hospital.

Historical NoteReturn to Top

In 1961, local businessmen and doctors began working on a plan to get a hospital in the Eastside neighborhoods of Gateway and Parkrose. The Portland Suburban Medical Group finally sponsored the building of Woodland Park Hospital to fill this need in 1962. Early strength was shown in their mental health, obstetric, and orthopedic programs. The hospital soon added extra wings to serve their growing need, while the orthopedists would come to be early proponents of Sports Medicine.

The Woodland Park Hospital Auxiliary (WPHA) was begun in 1974 with a series of social and fund-raising efforts; including luncheons, bake sales, dinner dances, fashion shows, holiday events, and opening a gift shop. They held workshops teaching life-saving techniques like CPR. They also started sports medicine programs with local high schools called the "Bumps n' Bruises Clinic". The proceeds went toward a variety of uses, such as "goodie bags" of toiletries and pillows for patients, equipment for the hospital, scholarship awards for medical and nursing students, and celebrations for long-term auxiliary volunteers.

The hospital was sold in 2004 to a larger managed health care company, and the WPHA came to an end.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection shows a variety of activities of the Woodland Park Hospital Auxiliary through the medium of photographic images in the form of bound albums and scrapbooks, unbound prints, and color slides.

"Series I: Albums" dates from 1968 to 1995 and shows the multifaceted work of the WPHA. They include not only the official charitable fundraising events for supplies, equipment, and scholarships, but also commemorations of important personal occasions of the Auxiliary members themselves, such as birthdays and retirements.

"Series II: Prints" covers the period 1968-1995 and, thus, includes some files predating the creation of the Auxiliary itself. They include images of medical staff and volunteers, visits by local and state officials, and a multitude of event pictures.

"Series III: Slides" dates from 1979 to 1985. The slides show staff and patients interacting, as well as the hospital itself and related activities.
