Historical Note
Dr. Ivan Lloyd Jirak was the founder of the Explorer’s Club of Pittsburgh. He served in World War II in the Pacific theater where he scaled his first mountain, and fell in love with exploring and climbing. He was a teacher, a principal, and an explorer. He founded the Explorer’s Club in 1947 and the Angeda Kimonhon School of Exploratory Sciences in 1971. After his retirement from teaching and acting as a school administrator in 1983, Ivan and his wife Debbie formed Economic Adventure Tours, a travel company that took groups on trips around the world. He led expeditions around the world in such activities as mountaineering, spelunking, skydiving, hang gliding, scuba diving, base jumping and rafting. Some of his most notable trips include Angel Falls in Venezuela, Costa Rica, Sangay Volcano in Ecuador, and Mt. Satima in Kenya. Within the United States, he loved Seneca Rocks in West Virginia and he built several cabins there, as well as frequent trips to Laurel Caverns near Pittsburgh.
