Biographical NoteReturn to Top
May Mendelbaum Edel (1909-1964) completed her M.A. in Anthropology in 1932 and Ph.D. in 1939 at Columbia University, where she worked as a research assistant to Franz Boas. Edel performed her early anthropological fieldwork under the direction of Franz Boas among the Tillamook Indians of Northwestern Oregon. Her Ph.D. dissertation, "The Tillamook Language", was based on the results of this fieldwork and was published in the "International Journal of American Linguistics".
