Biographical Note
Jean Kendall Glazer was born in Skamokawa, Washington, but moved to Portland, Oregon, with her family as a child. She attended the University of Oregon in Eugene and the Institute of Design in Chicago, Illinois. During her education, she developed a lifelong interest in the Bauhaus movement; in the 1990s, she designed a home for herself in the Bauhaus style. Her career began as an art teacher for junior high and high school students in Salem, Oregon. She was head of the Art Education Department at the University of Oregon from 1947 to 1952. She began teaching at Portland State University in 1959, and worked there until her retirement in 1987. She was named Oregon Art Educator of the Year in 1988, and Portland State University created a scholarship named for her.
Glazer married Howard Leonard Glazer (1923-2010) in 1948. The couple had three children: Peter, Michele, and David. They divorced in 1971. Jean Kendall Glazer died in 2015.
Content Description
The collection consists of an oral history narrative of Jean Kendall Glazer's life, edited by Patricia Rovainen based on original interviews. In the oral history, Glazer describes her upbringing in Portland, Oregon; her education at the University of Oregon in Eugene and at the Institute of Design in Chicago, Illinois; her family life; her career as an art educator; her travels; her friendship with Shirley Blum Tanzer; and her personal collection of artwork. Also included are several pages of family photographs, and a copy of Glazer's 2015 obituary.
