Historical Note

The University of Montana Foundation was established in 1950 with a mission to ensure the University of Montana’s excellence, access, and affordability through a public/private funding partnership. It is empowered to accept and administer gifts, requests, and trusts for the benefit of the University and its various departments and programs, and has supported research, scholarship and building projects. It was known as the University of Montana Endowment Foundation until 1965.

Content Description

The University of Montana Foundation collection consists unpublished materials, including financial records and meeting minutes, published newsletters and event programs, and the files of early Board member Gordon Rognlien. To facilitate discovery and use, these materials have been combined to create this single Foundation collection.

Arrangement

The collection has been divided into three series:

Series I: Foundation Records, 1.8 linear feet, 1952-2010

Series II: Newsletters, 0.2 linear feet, 1977-2015

Series III: D. Gordon Rognlien, 1.0 linear feet, 1951-1986

Custodial History

The custodial history of this collection is unknown.

Acquisition Information

There is no clear documentation about how or when the Foundation records and publications came to the University of Montana Archives. The files of Gordon Rognlien were transferred to the Archives in 1986.

Processing Note

During processing, official UM Foundation records, Foundation publications and the Foundation papers of a board member were organized as individual series, but combined into one collection.
