Historical Note
Julia was an American television sitcom that aired on NBC from 1968 to 1971 and was notable for being the second weekly series to feature an African American woman in a non-stereotypical leading role. The show starred Diahann Carroll as Julia Baker, a widowed single mother and nurse working in a medical office at a large aerospace company. Created during a time of limited diverse representation on network television, Julia ran for 86 episodes and was produced by Savannah Productions, Inc., Hanncarr Productions, Inc., and 20th Century-Fox Television. The series originally aired without a laugh track, though one was added during its syndication and cable rebroadcasts in the late 1980s. Supporting cast included Lloyd Nolan, Paul Winfield, Fred Williamson, and Marc Copage as Julia’s young son, Corey.
