Historical Note

Jack Lippes (1924-2022) was an obstetrician-gynecologist in Buffalo, New York. He is known for inventing the Lippes loop, the first widely prescribed intrauterine contraception device, at a time when IUD contraception was frowned upon. His IUD became the gold standard and led to the postpartum Lippes loop. Lippes also moved the field of in vitro fertilization forward through his research of oviduct fluid which increased the rate of successful pregnancies. He taught at the University of Buffalo for 47 years and served as medical director of Planned Parenthood of Buffalo from 1962 to 1978. In 1981 Lippes helped open the first in vitro fertilization clinic in Buffalo and acted as its first director.
