Biographical Note
Peter S. Green was born in 1918 in Regina, Saskatchewan and moved to Seattle with his parents when he was three years old. He attended West Seattle High School and was employed by the Boeing Company shortly after his graduation in 1936. Peter Green married in 1951 and he and his wife Georgina had two sons, Mark and Rick. He retired from the Boeing Company in 1983 after 45 years of service. Throughout his life he sang at weddings, church services, reunions and cruise ship talent contests. His repertoire included English and Italian classical standards as well as religious and contemporary songs. He passed away in 2009 at the age of 91.
Content Description
The collection consists of two compact disks and nine original 78 rpm phonograph records of songs performed by tenor Peter S. Green on the Gold Shield Coffee Hour on KIRO radio.
Historical Background
During the 1940s Peter Green performed on the Gold Shield Coffee Hour, a musical variety show broadcast Sunday nights on KIRO Radio in Seattle. KIRO Radio started in 1927 as a small 100-watt station. In 1941, KIRO became the first station in the Pacific Northwest to be licensed up to 50,000 watts of power. Shortly after that, the FCC froze all radio station construction and power increases and KIRO remained the most powerful radio voice north of San Francisco and west of Minneapolis during WWII. Dozens of entertainment programs such as the Gold Shield Coffee Hour were broadcast on KIRO as part of the Pacific Northwest war morale effort.
