Historical Note

Pope Yeatman (1861-1953) was an internationally known mining engineer who was awarded the William Lawrence Saunders Medal in 1934. Yeatman received his degree in mining engineering from Washington University in 1883. By 1889, he was employed by the Doe Run Lead Company. In 1891, he joined the Lehigh Zinc and Iron Company to oversee ore mining and processing. In 1895 he managed several Rand gold mines in South Africa. From 1899 to 1905, he examined and made a report on the Camp Bird Mine in Colorado for the J.B. Robinson’s Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company. In 1904 he was chief engineer for the Guggenheim mines and he developed large Chilean copper mines as well as Guggenheim interests in Alaska and China. In 1917, Yeatman was hired as consulting engineering for the Raw Materials Division of the Council of National Defense’s War Industries Board which was formed during World War I to allocate critical raw materials to the war effort. During World War II he was director of the non-ferrous department of the War Industries Board. After the war, Yeatman made a study of mines in Belgium and France and then he became a partner in the New York firm of Yeatman and Berry. He was a Legion of Honor member of American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers.
