Summary
The Robert C. Steensma papers (1907-2012) contain the personal, military, and university documents of his life and career. Steensma was an officer in the Naval Reserve from 1948 to 1983 and retired with the rank of Captain. He taught at the University of South Dakota, Augustana College. From 1966 to 2001, he taught at the University of Utah. He is the author of several books and articles, including Wallace Stegner's Salt Lake City.

Biographical Note

Robert C. Steensma (b. 1930) was an officer in the Naval Reserve from 1948 to 1983 and retired with the rank of captain. He graduated with a B.A. from Augustana College in South Dakota in 1952, received his M.A. from the University of South Dakota in 1955, and his Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 1961. Robert Steensma instructed at the University of South Dakota in 1952 and again from 1959 to 1962, at Augustana from 1955 to 1957, and at Utah State University from 1962 to 1966. He came to the University of Utah as an associate professor from 1966 to 1971, when he received tenure. He taught until 2001. Robert Steensma continued his training in Naval Reserve courses as well. He earned certificates in International Relations in 1971 and in Strategy and Policy in 1977 from the United States Naval College. He published Sir William Temple in 1970, Dr. John Arbuthnot in 1979, and Drifting to an Unknown Future: The Civil War Letters of James E. Northup and Samuel W. Northup in 2000. In addition to this, he has published numerous articles and lectured extensively. The last box contains materials pertaining to his book Wallace Stegner's Salt Lake City.
