Mary Shallenberger Papers, 1961-1993

The series includes correspondence between Shallenberger and Natawidjaja, who traded information on their countries to teach their students about other countries and cultures. The series also includes a few other letters from students and different teachers wanting to trade information. Shallenberger wrote her letters in Indonesian and Natawidjaja wrote in English.

The series consists of photographs that Natawidjaja sent to Shallenberger during their 30 years of correspondence. Many of the photos are of Natawidjaja and his family, including himself, his wife, friends, children, and grandchildren. Natawidjaja sent photos of his family in various settings, from the inside of his house to ceremonial dances that his family participated. Natawidjaja also sent scenic photos of his home town of West Java, Indonesia, including the school in which he worked. Two photos are of a local volcano erupting on April 5, 1982. The series has been assigned photo numbers and been transferred to the photo collection.

The series contains postcards and Christmas cards from Indonesia that Natawidjaja sent to Shallenberger during their 30-year correspondence. The series also contains Indonesian fact books and pamphlets that describes the Indonesian country and culture. Many of the pamphlets are written in Indonesian. An Indonesian dictionary is also included. Photocopies of Indonesian currency are included to show Shallenberger's students what the money looks like.
