Biographical Note
Bessie "Betty" Oates was born in Granite, Montana on June 1, 1901. She worked briefly as an operator for the Bell Telephone Company before she took a telephone operator position with the United States Forest Service in 1921. Oates eventually became the chief telephone operator for the Missoula, Montana area and held that position until her retirement from the Forest Service in 1962. Betty Oates remained in Missoula until her death on October 22, 1984.
Content Description
This collection contains 21 reels of 8mm film. The majority of the films are home movies from vacations and outings, likely filmed by Oates or family and friends. The home movies are in color with no sound.

In 2021, the home movies were cleaned, placed on new reels, and rehoused for preservation purposes. At that time, six reels of commercially produced television programs from the 1940s and 1950s were removed from this collection.
