Biographical Note

Edwin Ayer (1824-1901) was born in Saybrook, Connecticut on October 15, 1824. His family had emigrated from Norwich, England in 1637 and settled in Saybrook. Some members of the family came to California by way of Cape Horn in 1849. Later descendants moved to Washington State. Charles Henry Ayer (Edwin's son) was an attorney and judge in Thurston County, Washington. C.H. Ayer's family includes: Cora Ellis Ayer, wife; Elizabeth Ayer (donor), daughter, first registered woman architect in Washington State; John Youngs Ayer, son, served in the U.S. army Ambulance Corps during WW I.
