Historical Note

Pitirim Aleksandrovich Sorokin (1889-1968) was a Russian American sociologist. After the rise of Vladimir Lenin’s regime in Russia, Sorokin was forced to flee the country. He became a professor of sociology at the University of Minnesota in 1924 before accepting the head role of Harvard University’s new sociology department in 1930. As a sociologist, Sorokin is known for his contributions to social cycle theory which focuses on the argument that stages of human society and history repeat cyclically.
