Historical Note

Seattle Peace Park Associates was formed in 1989 to build and maintain a public park on a piece of city-owned property to the west side of University Bridge and near the Burke-Gilman trail. The president of the organization was Floyd Schmoe. The park features a bronze statue of Sadako Sadai, a young Japanese girl who survived the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima but died of radiation poisoning at age 12. Sadako, also called "Peace Child," holds aloft her symbol of peace, an origami paper crane. The sculptor of the statue was Daryl Smith. The park was dedicated August 6, 1990. The organization was dissolved in 1996.
