Biographical Note
The Maxwell Brothers include Joseph D. (D. September 9th, 1914), Grayson Y. (D. February 20th, 1913), William W. (D. May 8th, 1919), and Charles Thomas (D. August 1st, 1933). Joseph D. Maxwell was the first of the brothers to venture from the state of their birth, Tennessee, and set up a photography business in Walla Walla, Washington between 1875 and 1878. Charles Thomas Maxwell joined his brother in April of 1883 and set up a photography studio in Dayton, WA. Grayson and William joined Joseph and Charles later on.
The four Maxwell brothers jointly ran three photography studios located in Spokane, Dayton, and Walla Walla. Charles Thomas and Joseph were the first photographers in Spokane, opening their Spokane Falls location in 1884. Joseph D. managed the Dayton studio and Charles Thomas managed the Walla Walla studio. It is likely that Grayson and William managed the remaining location, in Spokane, together. All three photography studios operated into the 1900s.
Content Description
