Dean Roberts (1931 - 2015)

As a child, Dean Roberts carried his skis to school so he could “fly” off jumps he built along the way. He held a natural passion for the sport and by the eighth grade, he was a regular at Snowbasin, learning the art of alpine skiing.

At age 17 Dean was a competitive ski jumper and member of both the Weber State and U of U alpine ski teams. In 1959, Dean certified with the Intermountain Ski Instructors Association. Five years later Dean became the owner and director of the ski school at Solitude - the mountain he loved more than any other. In 1994 he became Solitude’s Director of Skiing.

Dean is an Honorary Lifetime member of the PSIA-Intermountain Division, and in 2006 was selected to the PSIA-AASI-Intermountain Ski Instructors Hall of Fame. In 2011 he received his 50-year pin - along with a letter which encapsulates the essence of his remarkable career and echoes the sentiments of a grateful ski industry.

The letter reads: “Thank you for introducing thousands to the wonders of sliding on snow.”

Roberts was inducted into the Intermountain Ski Hall of Fame in 2017. The above biograpical note is from that event.

1 1 General images
  • 1: Dean Roberts, age 15. Snow Basin, 1946. (Here you have the latest ski fashion for the year 1946. Please note the tapered trousers fitting snugly into the boot uppers. And the boots, themselves, are a product of the latest technology of the times, with full leather uppers, square hole at the toe that fits securely into the toe irons and the sturdy laces, which when pulled tightly, provides all the ankle support anyone could possibly wish. Just imagine the wonder edge control provided by these boots.
  • Also, please note the striped shirt over which our model wears a plaid shirt-jacket, which not only provides warmth, but allows for necessary freedom of movement. And, of course, you can't overlook the necessary scarf needed for such outings in the snow. All this topped off by a visored ski cap.
  • Our model is also displaying the very latest in ski equipment. Skis by Northland of solid ridge top hickory with "Lettner" steel edges securely screwed to the bottom edges. And of course, they would not be complete without adjustable "Dovre" cables to hold the heel of the boot securely in place.
  • And not to be overlooked is the professional manner that these ski togs are displayed by our model, Mr. Dean Roberts. Very cool the way he hooks his thumb in the pants pocket. Don't you think so?. Author: Kenneth Oscar (Buss) Roberts
