Biographical Note
Anna Marie Sherwin emigrated from Stavanger, Norway at the age of 13. She was active in the Norwegian community in Seattle, wrote stories about Seattle history, especially Norwegian-American history, and was an active genealogist. A copy of her "family book" is in the Library's collection. She also compiled a scrapbook on the 1956 Scandinavian Music Festival in Seattle.
Historical Background
Norwegians were among the first settlers in the Pacific Northwest, and formed active fraternal organizations to celebrate Nordic heritage, including the Daughters of Norway. In 1905, the Daughters of Norway formed the Valkyrien Lodge in Seattle, and joined with Tacoma's Embla Lodge and Spokane's Freya Lodge in 1908 to create the Grand Lodge of the Daughters of Norway of the Pacific Coast.
The Seattle Norwegian Centennial was a re-enactment celebration held on June 28th, 1925 to mark the anniversary of the landing of the "Sloopers" in 1825. The term "Slooper" refers to the descendants of the original fifty-two pioneers who left Stavanger, Norway on the 4th or 5th of July in 1825 and landed in the port of New York on October 9th, 1825. They sailed on the small sloop "Restaurationen" or "Restoration", which has been called the "Norwegian Mayflower" and signaled the beginning of the major influx of Norwegian immigrants during the nineteenth century.

Norway Hall
The Norway Hall was designed in a Scandinavian style by Sonke Englehart Sonnichsen, and built in 1915 as a center for Norwegian culture and fraternal societies. The interior featured murals by Sverre Mack and Yngvar Sonnichsen. After the Sons of Norway moved to a different location, the building was used as a dance club by several different owners, until it was purchased in 2003 by Cornish College of the Arts. The renovated building is now called the Raisbeck Performance Hall. Some of the original murals have been lost, but the surviving murals hang in the Seattle Leif Erikson Lodge.
