Historical Background

Norwegians were among the first settlers in the Pacific Northwest, and formed active fraternal organizations to celebrate Nordic heritage, including the Daughters of Norway. In 1905, the Daughters of Norway formed the Valkyrien Lodge in Seattle, and joined with Tacoma's Embla Lodge and Spokane's Freya Lodge in 1908 to create the Grand Lodge of the Daughters of Norway of the Pacific Coast.

The Seattle Norwegian Centennial was a re-enactment celebration held on June 28th, 1925 to mark the anniversary of the landing of the "Sloopers" in 1825. The term "Slooper" refers to the descendants of the original fifty-two pioneers who left Stavanger, Norway on the 4th or 5th of July in 1825 and landed in the port of New York on October 9th, 1825. They sailed on the small sloop "Restaurationen" or "Restoration", which has been called the "Norwegian Mayflower" and signaled the beginning of the major influx of Norwegian immigrants during the nineteenth century.
