Historical Note

Charles (Chuck) Wellner was born 3 January 1911 in Enid, Oklahoma. He grew up in Twin Falls, Idaho where he graduated from High School in 1928. He attended the University of Idaho from 1929 to 1933 and earned a forestry degree. He was hired by the U.S. Forest Service in 1933 and earned a master of forestry degree from Yale University during 1937 and 1938. During World War II, he served as an aerology officer in the U.S. Navy. In the U.S. Forest Service, he served as silviculturist, research scientist, division chief and assistant directory in the Northern Rocky Mountain and Intermountain Forest and Range Experiment Stations.

Wellner married Ethel Wolf in June 1939 in Moscow and they had four children. She died in 1969. Wellner retired in 1973 and became a Forest Service volunteer with the goal of establishing Research Natural Areas in Idaho, from which a majority of the collection references. He was awarded numerous awards for his achievements and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Idaho in forestry in 1989. Wellner died 5 June 2001 in Moscow, Idaho.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

Originally, this collection was separated into two donations. One donation was 8 boxes of materials and the second 1.5 boxes. During processing some materials were removed. These include materials that were duplicates or damaged primarily. The remaining materials were separated into 13 series based upon topic. These include: National Forest Lands; Plants, Animals, and Pests; Rivers; Class/Educational; Fire; Society of American Foresters and The Nature Conservancy; Associations and Conferences; Forest Service; Communications; Old Growth Committee; Miscellaneous materials; Books and Maps; and Additional Materials.

Series I: National Forest Lands was then split into four sub-series: Research Natural Areas; Natural Areas; National Natural Landmarks; Miscellaneous National Forest.

These series and sub-series were developed based upon topics of commonality within the collection. Some of the collections overlap and best judgement was used to determine which area materials would fall under.

Acquisition Information

Materials were donated by Kent Wellner between June and August of 2001.
