Historical Note

HistoryLink is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation established in 1997 under the ownership of Walt Crowley, a Seattle historian and activist, and Marie McCaffrey, a Seattle-based organizer and graphic designer. The corporation maintains historylink.org, an online encyclopedia of Washington State history. The site, launched in 1999, is marketed as "the first and largest encyclopedia of regional history created expressly for the Internet." During its early years, HistoryLink focused primarily on Seattle and King County history, but was able to expand its scope in 2003 after a receiving a sizable grant from the Microsoft Corporation. HistoryLink has also published books on aspects of Washington State history. Documents within the collection were compiled or authored by HistoryLink staff including Walt Crowley, Priscilla Long, Heather MacIntosh, Paul Dorpat, David Wilma, Alan Stein, Paula Becker, and others. A comprehensive list of HistoryLink contributors can be found at http://www.historylink.org/File/20002.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

This collection was processed at the series level according to subject. Series included in the collection include: Seattle World's Fair, Seattle City Light, Seattle Buildings and Landmarks, Seattle Monorail Project, Washington State Department of Transportation History Book Research, People, Arts, Alaska-Yukon Pacific Exposition, Miscellaneous Seattle, Airport, Ports and Transportation, Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center (CHRMC), HistoryLink, and Miscellaneous. Folders with established dates have been arranged chronologically. In the case where a significant number of documents of a specific type were encountered (e.g. interview notes and transcripts), a subseries was created, and folders were described according to their subject. With rare exception, the arrangement as it arrived from HistoryLink has been preserved. Where no original order could be discerned, the processing archivist has imposed an alphabetical arrangement (see Box 14). Oversize materials can be found in Box 15.

Separated Materials

Box 13, which contains documents relating to HistoryLink and its co-creator, Walt Crowley, has been retained by HistoryLink. Researchers who wish to access the materials located in Box 13 should contact HistoryLink directly: https://www.historylink.org/ContactUs
