Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Otis Elevator Company was established in 1853 by Elisha Graves Otis, the same year that he sold his elevator with the elevator safety brake that he invented. Otis is known to have collaborated with P.T. Barnum to have the elevator on exhibit at the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1854 in order to boost sales. The first passenger elevator was installed in the E.V. Haughwout Building in 1955 which prompted Otis to come up with more safety measures. He added hydraulics to his elevator in the 1870s, and the first elevators were installed in the U.S. Capitol and White House in 1880. The company continued to install the contraption in notable American building and monuments into the twentieth century. When WWII began, Otis shifted to building aircraft and ships in addition to elevators. The company spent the second half of the twentieth century envisioning and producing more technological innovations such as the computer-controlled elevator in the late 1970s as well as expanding globally.
