Historical Note

The Biomedical Information Communication Center (BICC) at OHSU was completed and opened in 1991. The objective of this building was to bring together all departments at OHSU that offered information or communication services. At the time, that included the Library, EdCOMM, the EduTech Center, photography, telecommunications, and academic computing. As part of the BICC, Dr. J. Robert Beck, along with Dr. Kent A. Spackman, brought a new research program to OHSU: biomedical informatics. The informatics program moved to the 5th floor of the BICC in 1991 and began a training program in 1992. The BICC was focused on expanding the informatics program, and providing training and services in all things information, communication, and research.

Content Description

The Biomedical Information Communication Center (BICC) Records documents the planning, construction, and promotion of the innovative building, as well as ongoing operations and celebrations. Spanning from 1981 to 2016, the collection consists of committee and group meeting minutes and related documentation, schematic designs and blueprints, photographs of the construction process and people who worked in the BICC, library training materials, staff newsletters, Oregon Health Information Online (ORHION) manuals and information, OHSU Medline reports and information, and Integrated Academic Information Management System (IAIMS) records. Some materials provide information about the Biomedical Informatics program and Dr. J. Robert Beck's early involvement.

Materials in this collection also include publicity material on the construction of the building, and conferences and programs that surround the planning and opening of the BICC. This collection contains extensive materials on the activities that document the planning, opening, and promotion of the new building.
