Historical Note
The Four Flats were a barber shop quartet consisting of Harlow Ankeny (Baritone), Norval Hadley (First Tenor), Richard "Dick" Cadd (Bass), and Ronald Crecelius (Second Tenor). Originally formed in 1947 at Pacific College in Newberg, OR (now known as George Fox University), they went on to work with World Vision as well as Crusade for Christ and Billy Graham. They traveled the world on missions trips before eventually parting ways with World Vision and with each other in 1961. In 1968 and 1972, the group came together again for a Reunion Tour, where they performed once more in and around Newberg. The group also perfomed in 1991 at the centenial celebration of George Fox College.
Content Description
This collection contains newspaper articles, photos, music programs, letters, and musical recordings pertaining to the Four Flats from their early years at Pacific College in 1947, early missions trips to Asia in the early 1950's, their time in World Vision from 1956 to 1961, primarily including missions trips to the Philippines and Alaska, their Reunion Tours, especially around Newberg, OR, in 1968, and their later lives from 1968 to 2005. The collection would be useful to those researching barber shop quartets or musical groups in general, missions work, especially pertaining to World Vision and missions trips in Asia, and/or influential Friends Church members, particularly in Newberg.
