Historical Note

Naomi E. (Van Aryesdale) Stebbins was born in January 10, 1897 in Detroit, Michigan. She moved with her family to Tacoma, Washington when she was a young child. There she attended the College of Puget Sound and Washington State University. She then came to Moscow, Idaho to attend the University of Idaho to complete study in Political Science.

From 1957 to 1962 she served in the Idaho State House of Representatives. During this time she represented Shoshone County as a member of the Democratic party, and lived in Wardner, Idaho. In her last term, she was the only woman serving in the House.

Stebbins was an active member on the Education, Industry and Labor, and Mining Committees. She was specifically interested in women's' roles in labor, and even sponsored a bill that advocated for a forty-hour work week and overtime pay for women. It was defeated by three votes. Stebbins died on April 10, 1992.
