Central Washington University Faculty Papers, James E. Brooks, 1946-2013 (bulk 1961-1978)

James E. Brooks began his career as a student at Central Washington College of Education, graduating in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in geography. He went on to the University of Washington, where he obtained both his master’s degree and doctorate in geography. He taught for one year at Eastern Washington University, then served as assistant to the president at Portland State University for two years. In 1961, he became president of Central Washington State College, serving until 1978. After his presidency, he joined Central’s faculty, teaching for several years before his retirement.

Brooks served as acting president of Yakima Valley Community College from 1980 to 1982. Over the years, he served on five commissions for Washington state. In each case, he was appointed to the commission at the behest of the state's governor. In 1986 Central Washington University named Brooks as Distinguished Alumni and Educator of the Year. The university also named its library in Brooks' honor in 2003.
