Historical Note

Frederick Stewart Buchanan (1931-2016) was born in Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland, on 9 August 1931. In 1949, he immigrated to the United States with his parents and settled in Utah. He served an LDS mission to Great Britain from 1951-1953 and was in the United States Army from 1953-1955. Buchanan holds a B.A. and M.S. degrees in History and English from the University of Utah. He taught these subjects at Bountiful High School in Bountiful Utah, from 1960-1963. He earned a Ph.D. in Education from Ohio State University in 1967 and taught at the University of Toledo in Ohio from 1967-1970. In 1970 he received an appointment to the University of Utah where he taught history of education in the Department of Educational Studies until his retirement as an emeritus professor in 1996.
