Content Description

The Frank Herman Jonas collection (circa 1840s-1980s) reflects Jonas' research interests in the areas of Germany and the Nazi party, American politics (particularly in the West), and propaganda techniques. As a result, the collection contains numerous Nazi publications and documents stemming from German political activity in the 1950s, correspondence with notable Utah and other Western politicians dating from the 1930s through the 1970s, campaign and party ephemera from the same regions and time period, and U. S. and foreign propaganda materials from the World War II era. Jonas conducted extensive research on Western politics during the immediate post-World War II period, and the collection includes research files, drafts, and completed manuscripts, as well as research notes, for this work. In addition to contributing to and editing anthologies containing considerations of politics in the western United States, Jonas researched and wrote about several Utah politicians, including U. S. Congressman Douglas Stringfellow, U. S. Senator Elbert Thomas, political consultant Walter Quigley, and Utah Governor and Salt Lake City Mayor J. Bracken Lee. Another research interest of Jonas' was the election history of Utah, and the collection contains statistical data culled from newspapers and other sources for the 1890s and most of the twentieth century.

Also included in the collection are significant amounts of materials concerning Jonas' involvement with the American Veterans of World War II, the Western Political Science Association, and the Utah Legislative Council--organizations in which Jonas actively participated. In the early 1950s, Jonas was employed as a Press Scrutiny Officer, Cultural Exchange Officer, and Information Specialist for the Office of the U. S. High Commissioner for Germany, and the collection holds a large number of documents produced by that office, as well as miscellaneous items collected by Jonas during that time. The collection also contains some personal records.
