Historical Note

John R. Arnold (1858-1935) was an attorney and judge whose family settled in Wyoming in 1870. He was the Uinta, Wyoming, County Clerk (1888-1890) and then the Uinta County Treasurer (1890-1892). He was a partner in Edic Steadman & Arnold (1884-1890). He was admitted to the Wyoming Bar in 1896 and partnered with attorney John C. Hamm from 1897 to 1909. From 1914 to 1933, he was judge in Wyoming’s third judicial district. He also was one of the owners of both Collett Mining Company and Giant Chief Mining Corporation, as well as a director of the First National Bank of Evanston and an owner of Mountain Fuel Supply Company. Arnold and wife Sadie (Davis) Arnold were parents to Minnie, Franklin, Florence, Ethel, Charles, and Dorothy. Other family member represented in the collection include C.P. Arnold, Otto Arnold, and Elizabeth Arnold Stone (Arnold’s siblings), as well as Earl A. Hewitt, son of Arnold’s daughter Florence.

Content Description

The John R. Arnold papers contain correspondence to and from John R. Arnold, including correspondence between him and V.J. Tidball, another Wyoming judge. Also included are legal documents, including briefs and jury instructions from cases tried by Arnold, and legal research compiled by Arnold. There are also records of several businesses in which Arnold was involved, including Mountain Fuel Supply Company, Benton Shale Oil Company, Giant Chief Mining Corporation, and Spring Valley Improvement Company, as well as correspondence and financial records of members of Arnold's family.
