Summary
Issac Libby served as president of Spokane College and as the minister of the First Methodist Church. In 1884 Libby and his wife opened the Spokane English and Classical School. From 1887 to 1891 he served as superintendent of schools for Spokane County. In 1896 Libby became a full-time teacher of Latin and Greek at Spokane High School, and head of the classics department in 1902. The collection contains carbon letter copying books of correspondence and files containing materials relating to Libby’s various professional positions and his real estate and farming ventures.

Biographical Note

Issac Libby came to Spokane Falls in 1882. He served as president of Spokane College, the first institution of higher education in the city. That same year he also became minister of the First Methodist Church. In 1884 Libby and his wife opened the Spokane English and Classical School. From 1887 to 1891 he served as superintendent of schools for Spokane County. In 1896 Libby became a full-time teacher of Latin and Greek at Spokane High School, and head of the classics department in 1902.

Content Description

The collection contains carbon letter copying books of Libby’s outgoing correspondence, 1882-1887, 1889-1903, and incoming correspondence, often with carbons of letters sent, 1876-1923. The correspondence covers a range of topics, including Libby’s work on education, his position as a Methodist minister, Spokane College, the Spokane English and Classical School, the Archaeological Institute of America, and his real estate and farming ventures. Also included are ephemeral materials relating to Libby’s various interests and miscellaneous materials pertaining to other family members.
