Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Department of Biology at the University of Oregon is a scientific research department affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences that was founded in 1876. Originally a part of the Academy of Science, the department worked closely with physics, chemistry, zoology, and botany to establish curriculum and education standards for science. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the University of Oregon experienced a "golden age" of scientific studies when it was ranked 25th nationally in research science. As a result, the Department of Biology expanded through the complete reconstruction of the department's facilities and the introduction of a new research curriculum in genetics and biopsychology. As of 2025, the Department of Biology provides undergraduate and graduate students with opportunities to study alongside scientists both on campus in Eugene, Oregon, and in Coos Bay, Oregon with the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in a variety of topics such as cellular and molecular biology, developmental biology, ecology and evolution, human biology, marine biology, neuroscience and behavior, and bioinformatics.
