Biographical Note
University of Washington Professor Emeritus of Architecture and Urban Design and Planning. Thiel was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1920. His degrees include BSc, Webb Institute of Naval Architecture (1943); MSc, University of Michigan (1948); and BArch, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1952). He was an instructor in Naval Architecture at MIT 1949-1950; an instructor at University of California, Berkeley, 1954-1956; and a professor of Architecture and Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington 1961-1991. In 1981 he founded the Center for Experiential Notation.
After his retirement from the University of Washington, Thiel revisted his roots in naval architecture, designing a series of pedal-powered wooden boats. He also became more involved in community activism, promoting people-centered urban design. Throughout his career at the University of Washington and after, he served as a consultant to the Roosevelt Neighbors' Alliance and to the University District Community Council. Records of Thiel's activism and consulting work with both the Roosevelt Neighbors' Alliance and the University District Community Council concerning neighborhood land use. Includes building permits, compliance reports, legal briefs, flyers, petitions, open letters, maps, pamphlets, correspondence, surveys, meeting minutes, publications, newspaper clippings, photographic prints, negatives, architectural drawings, and blueprints. Also includes writings by Thiel and others on various topics such as urban development, gentrification, and historic preservation.
