The Carlos S. Maldonado Papers consist of research files and teaching files from Maldonado's time as a professor at Eastern Washington University and a graduate student at the University of Oregon. The files contain drafts and finished materials for publication or public display, photographs, background research materials, teaching files, administrative files for the Chicana/o/x studies program, and video and audio recordings of interviews.

Historical Note

Carlos S. Maldonado was born in Southern Texas in 1953 and moved with his family to the Northwest in the early 1960's. The Maldonado family were primarily farm workers at that time. Carlos Maldonado eventually went on to earn his PhD and in 1987 became the director and associate professor in the Chicano Program at Eastern Washington University. He was instrumental in developing this program.

Dr. Maldonado published articles, book chapters, and books which focused on the Chicano experience in the Northwest. He was also director of the College Assistance Migrant Program. This program was designed to assist young migrant farmworkers attain higher education.

Dr. Maldonado retired to Yoder, Oregon and passed away September 18, 2008 from cancer.

Content Description

The Carlos S. Maldonado Papers consists of Maldonado's teaching and research files from his graduate work at the University of Oregon and his time as a professor at Eastern Washington University. The research files include copies of records from Colegio Cesar Chavez, materials about Latinx populations near Woodburn, Oregon, Latinx communities in the Pacific Northwest, Spokane-area Mexican Americans, and Latinx veterans in the Northwest. Maldonado's teaching files include materials on courses in Chicanx history, Chicanx literature, and Latinx students at EWU, including files on MEChA and diversity programs at EWU. The collection also contains files on Maldonado's role in the National Association of Chicana and Chicano Studies, including the Spokane conference hosted by EWU.
