Content Description

This collection consists mainly of research files on the featured women, including correspondence, research notes, and biographical sketches compiled by the contributors to the publication. Also included are files on women who were not profiled in the calendars. Approximately 160 women are represented by separate files, arranged alphabetically, by name. Smaller groups of papers and single items relating to other women have been filed by state of residence. Among the women represented in the calendars are Sally Ride, the first American woman in space; Sally Stanford, a Salinas, California madam who became mayor; Lozen, an Apache holy woman; and Ann Eliza Webb Young, wife of Mormon leader Brigham Young.

The collection also contains the calendars themselves as well as files relating to their production and publication.

  • Rose Hum Lee

Anne Matjeka, a librarian at Boise State University, collected information on Rose Hum Lee for The Herstory Calendar Project. The papers were donated to Special Collections as a supplement to this collection. Ms. Lee, a writer and professor, was born in Butte, Montana in 1904. A daughter of a mail order bride, Lee choose to marry for love. Then, much to her mother's dismay, she traveled with her husband to his native home in Canton, China. She worked as a secretary for American Corporation in Canton until the Japanese invaded in 1937. During this tumultuous period, Lee organized refugee centers and war relief efforts in conjunction with the International Red Cross. After experiencing eighteen months of saturated bombing on the city of Canton, Lee returned to the United States. She entered Carnegie Institute of Technology. She graduated in 1942 with a degree in social work. Lee continued her education at the University of Chicago, earning her PhD. Roosevelt University hired Lee in 1945. Lee eventually became the head of the department of social work and a full professor. Her work concerning Chinese-Americans and their assimilation received international recognition and praise. The papers include biographical sketches from Who Was Who in America and Notable American Women. Ms. Matjeka acquired the information pertaining to Lee's career directly from Roosevelt University. The obituaries report that that Lee is credited as being the first women of Chinese descent to head an academic department of a United States university. Samples of Lee's writings are included in the collection, as well as a bibliography and reviews of the works.
