Historical Note

Peter C. Maxfield was the Dean of the University of Wyoming’s college of Law, a Lawyer, as well as Counsel to the Wyoming Governor. Peter also served as a Wyoming State Planning Coordinator and in the Wyoming State Senate. Maxfield also served as the Director of the American National Bank in Laramie and a Trustee of the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation. He taught extensively in the Federal Income Tax area, he also taught courses in Federal Indian Law, Oil and Gas Law, Property, and Legal Research and Writing. His publications include books in the Tax and Indian Law fields, including ”Taxation of Mining Operations.” Peter received his B.A. from Regis College, his J.D. from the University of Denver in 1966, and his M.J.D. from Harvard in 1968. He passed the Wyoming Bar exam in 1969. Peter served as Dean of the Law College at the University of Wyoming from 1979 until he retired in 1996. Peter decided to pursue politics, running for the Wyoming State Senate successfully, before working as Counsel to the Governor. Maxfield later decided to run for the United States Senate in 1988. In 1990 he ran for the United States Congress seat, and then ran again in 1996. For each of these campaigns, Peter ran as a Democrat with promises of fixing the national debt crisis, improving exports and import laws, and reducing changes to Medicare and Social Security. In 1992, the Maxfields attended the National Democratic Convention where they attended lectures by the future president (Clinton) and represented the state of Wyoming.

Content Description

This collection contains Peter Maxfield’s personal papers, including his publications, correspondence files, and personal memorabilia. It also contains his legal and political records, including campaign records from both his Senate and Congress runs, as well as campaign memorabilia. Also included in the political materials are cassette tapes, audio film, and VHS tapes of campaign ads and interviews.
