Biographical Note
A native of Michigan, Louis Livingston first came to Spokane in 1924 to teach history at McKinley Junior High School. He joined the faculty at Lewis and Clark High School in 1925 and was appointed vice-principal by Henry Hart in 1928. Livingston earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Washington in 1932. In 1946 he served as superintendent of schools for American dependants in Seoul, Korea. Livingston retired from teaching in 1966 and assumed directorship of the Eastern Washington State Historical Society. He remained in that position until 1968 and continued to have an active interest in the society.
Content Description
The collection consists of personal correspondence, 1926-1983, from friends, former students, and family. There is also some correspondence related to Livingston’s research in history. Also included is correspondence from Livingston to his wife, documenting his work in Korea, 1946-1948. There are student evaluations from his history classes at Lewis & Clark High School, comments from parents, and various school committee reports, all documenting Livingston’s teaching career. Historical documents include clippings; documents and ephemeral items; extracts form articles; and various pioneer reminiscences. Livingston’s diary from a 1933 world trip contains political and cultural observations.
